#99 Indian Origin Researcher Invents Lens That Could Spell The End Of Spectacles

An Indian-origin researcher in the UK is developing an adjustable artificial lens, made from the same material found in smartphones and TV screens, which could improve vision in older people with presbyopia and cataracts.

Controlling presbyopia

As people age, their lenses lose flexibility and elasticity. This leads to a condition known as presbyopia, common in people over 45 years old, and can require optical aids, such as reading glasses. Devesh Mistry, a postgraduate research student in the School of Physics and Astronomy, at the University of Leeds are working with liquid crystal to create a truly adjustable artificial lens. "As we get older, the lens in our eye stiffens, when the muscles in the eye contract they can no longer shape the lens to bring close objects into focus," he said.

"Using liquid crystals, which we probably know better as the material used in the screens of TVs and smartphones, lenses would adjust and focus automatically, depending on the eye muscle movement," he added. Using these liquid crystal-based materials, Mistry's research is developing synthetic replacements for the diseased lens in the eye - a new generation of lenses and intra-ocular lens implants to rejuvenate sight.

Devesh is sure that the condition can be cured by using liquid crystals - a material that is not a solid, liquid or a gas but is in the fourth state of matter.

Liquid crystals are structured like a crystal, but its properties can be changed by mechanical or electrical force. It is used in TV and smartphone screens.

The new lens could be inserted into the eye in a quick operation with the application of local anesthetic, similar to how cataracts are currently inserted.

The eye surgeon would make destroy the old lens and replace it with the new one made of liquid crystal.

The prototype goes live in 2018

Mistry is currently researching and developing the lens in the lab and aims to have a prototype ready by the end of his doctorate in 2018. Within a decade, the research could see the new lens being implanted into eyes in a quick and straightforward surgical procedure under local anaesthetic. Eye surgeons would make an incision in the cornea and use ultrasound to break down the old lens. The liquid crystal lens would then be inserted, restoring clear vision. The lens could also have application in tackling cataracts - the clouding of natural lenses - which affect many people in later life and which can seriously affect vision. A common treatment is to remove and replace the natural lens.

"Liquid crystals are a very under-rated phase of matter"

Everybody's happy with solids, liquids and gases and the phases of matter, but liquid crystals lie between crystalline solids and liquids. They have an ordered structure like a crystal, but they can also flow like a liquid and respond to stimuli," he said. Mistry is working in collaboration with the Eurolens Research at the University of Manchester and with UltraVision CLPL, a specialist contact lens manufacturer headed by two University of Leeds alumni. His research builds upon previous work by the same collaborators, who developed a prototype contact lens with an electrically-controllable focus using liquid crystals. The first commercially-available liquid crystal lenses could be on sale between six and ten years' time.

#96 NVIDIA Pascal GPU Has 17 Billion Transistors and 32GB of VRAM, Packs Incredible Performance

GPUs, or Graphic Processing Units, popularized by NVIDIA in 1999, were a step towards accelerated computing to fasten memory intensive works like scientific analyses, engineering models, energy efficient data centers. And now, these processing units also come as separate graphic cards mostly famous for hardcore gaming.

NVIDIA in 2016 will announce their next gen NVIDIA Pascal GPU with an introduction of new technologies. A successor to Maxwell GPU, these new NVIDIA Pascal GPU processors will have the latest HBM2 and 16nm FinFET designs. The new NVIDIA Pascal GPU is believed to have whopping 17 billion transistor networks in its processing unit. These are almost double than on NVIDIA’a previous GM200 Maxwell that has 8 billion transistors and Fiji’s graphic processor that has 8.9 billion transistors.

The number of transistors in NVIDIA Pascal GPU assure of the best performing processing cores ever. The FinFET design technology increases the density of the transistors on the core by two times. Well, that’s the same thing that happened here. Also, the increased speed of above 60 percent and 70% less power consumption makes these GPUs’ wait worth it.

Along with the 17 billion transistors embedded into the core, the Pascal GPUs will also have access to up to 32 GB HBM memory across a 4096 bit memory interface. The new generation NVIDIA Pascal GPU cores have much more bandwidth compared to AMD’s Fiji and other graphic cards.

NVLINK is a unified Virtual Memory link with Gen 2.0 cache coherency features and the bandwidth increased to almost 5-12 times in comparison to general PCIe connection which will be introduced by the NVIDIA Pascal GPU. NVLINK will enable the connection of parallel GPUs that will enhance the performance in PCs for gaming and professional purposes.

The NVIDIA Pascal GPU promises incredible processing and for you an amazing user experience. The company plans to further exceed its computing prowess with Volta GPU with 150 Petaflops of performance and will be launched in 2017.

#94 The Hacker Search Engine “Shodan” is the Scariest Search Engine on Internet

Launched in 2009, Shodan is more of a prying eye across the world through the IoT rather than just a simple search engine. John Matherly, its creator, named his project after the villainous computer in the video game System Shock. As at present, Shodan is living up to his name. Already designated as ‘world’s scariest search engine’, it is commonly called the hacker search engine.

Shodan shows you what Google doesn’t. Designed with an aim to link all the devices connected to the Internet, it took no time to become a play zone for hackers and experimenters. Shodan works by collecting and stacking HTTP addresses from various devices linked over the Internet across the world. The indexing is done on the basis such as country, OS and brand.

Shodan’s scanning power can be assumed from the fact that it can detect the traffic lights, security cameras, control systems for gas stations, power grids, and even nuclear power plants. Most of these public services use little measures for online security and once exposed to hackers or terrorist organizations, the results could be disastrous.

If you have installed Telnet enabled security cameras in your home for “security”, then you might want to put them away. Hackers can breach into your system if your IoT hub is exposed on the Internet using this hacker search engine. It won’t be easy, however, it is not impossible either.

There are a number of devices out there that still run on their default passwords or no passwords at all. Shodan crawls through the Internet for such accessible devices and you are shown 50 of those if you have an account on Shodan. If you could give the website the reason to check these devices with their fees, you would get information of all the devices.

Though, even if you can,  we highly recommend you to not misuse Shodan, the hacker search engine.

#92 Here is how much a 1TB Surface Book will cost you

Interested in a 1TB Surface Book? If yes, then you’d better start saving up real fast

Microsoft’s Surface Book is the company’s very first attempt to target the notebook market, and the company has done so with a 2-in-1 hybrid machine that comprises up of impressive hardware, though it will still cost you. The starting model of Surface Book will cost you $1,499, and features Intel’s 14nm Skylake Core-i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The added benefit of using Intel’s 6th generation processors is that users will get extended battery life thanks to their thermal and power efficiency.

However, if you want to experience the best in notebook performance from Surface Book, then you will be required to spend more than twice the starting price that has been listed above. Why? Because the highest performing model of Surface Book is going to cost you $3,199. If you think that the price is far too high for a 13.5 inch notebook, let us a take a look at the hardware that is present this model.

First off, you are getting a Core-i7 processor, which has more threads compared to a Core-i5 CPU. Also, you will have 16GB of RAM present, and that is twice the amount that you got from the starting model of the notebook. However, last but certainly not least, you will have a whole terabyte of storage, which is going to be a killer hardware component for users who have a tendency of using their storage up at a very fast pace.

Now, the most expensive model of Surface Book features very impressive hardware, but perhaps the primary difference between the $3,199 one and the $1,499 is that the former has an NVIDIA GTX950M mobile graphics chip present inside it. Naturally, you will be able to engage in games, although you will not be able to afford to enable every graphical setting since the GPU is not that powerful enough compared to other chips. However, you will still be able to run applications that require a lot of GPU power, and for that, you will be required to spend a lot more.

The 13.5 inch notebook has a resolution of 3,000 x 2,000 pixels and you will receive a Surface Pen with the product too. If the price is far too expensive, then you can always wait later down the road, when Microsoft announces its successor, so hopefully, it will become cheaper by then.

#91 Apple shuts the doors on Pangu Jailbreak tool in iOS 9.1

Apple closes the two exploits which allowed Pangu to create jailbreak for iOS 9

Apple is known to be a closed-source software creator and no it does not like jailbreaks! This was again proved when the company moved at lightening speed to close two of the exploits which allowed Pangu to create its untethered jailbreak for iOS 9.

Apple released iOS 9.1 today morning, only a week after the first public jailbreak for iOS 9 devices hit the web. From the looks of it, the latest iOS iteration seems to shut doors on two of the exploits used by the Chinese hacking team Pangu, whose untethered jailbreak allowed users to jailbreak nearly all iPhones, iPad and iPod touch devices running IOS versions 9.0 through 9.0.2.

However, Apple has acknowledged the Pangu team for discovering two vulnerabilities in IOS operating system. In a security document posted on Apple’s website, the Cupertino giant credited Pangu with discovering two vulnerabilities. According to the web posting, both of the vulnerabilities have now been patched though it is unknown whether Pangu team will get any bug bounty for discovering them.

These include one vulnerability that would allow a malicious application to elevate privileges, and another that would allow a malicious application to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges.

The Apple jailbreaking community was not surprised at the closing of the two exploits because the Pangu jailbreak tool did not work with beta build of iOS 9.1. In fact, the general consensus among the jailbreaking crowd is that Pangu pushed their jailbreak just ahead of the iOS 9.1 release so that it could reach the hands of iPhone/iPad owners before the exploits were patched.

Meanwhile Pangu released a new build of their jailbreak tool (version 1.1.0) ahead of the 9.1 release of Apple this morning, Pangu said that the latest build was more stable and saw better results. The team has not said yet if it has a 9.1 hack in the works.

If you want to jailbreak your Apple devices, it is suggested that you stay away for iOS 9.1 version till Pangu or other jailbreakers find a new exploit on which they can build the next jailbreak tool. Do remember that the first malware to hit iPhones was spread through jailbroken phones.

#90 Speed up your Windows 10 with these three simple methods

These handy tips will give you faster startup, start menu access and faster shutdown in Windows 10

Are you using the new operating system Windows 10 on a brand-new PC or have you upgraded it in your old machine?

Want a faster computer? Provided below are three easy ways to speed up your Windows 10.

1. Faster Startup

Every time when the Windows boots up, you are asked to provide a password by Microsoft for security purpose. However, don’t you think it should be left to the users to decide if they want to password-protect their PCs? One would think so.

Considering the hoops that one has to jump through to disable the startup password, Microsoft clearly feels very strongly about it. Even though you may be a fast typist, stopping to enter that password costs you at least a few seconds per boot. To save those precious seconds, you can follow the steps below:

Step 1: Type netplwiz inside the Search field and press Enter.

Step 2: Uncheck the box next to Users must enter a username and password to use this computer. Then click Apply and enter your password to approve the change.

That’s it. Say goodbye to startup password.

2. Faster Start Menu

If Windows 10’s smart new Start menu is slow to load on the system, this means that you have a older machine. The reason for slow loading could be animation, and animation consumes horsepower. However, thankfully, you can turn off that animation for speedier access to Start. Here’s how:

Step 1: Type sysdm.cpl in the Search field and then press Enter.

Step 2: Click on the Advanced tab, and then the Settings button in the Performance section.

Step 3: Uncheck the box for Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing, and then click Apply.

It’s done. The Start menu should now snap to life a bit faster.

3. Faster Shutdown

The shutdown process in Windows 10 requires three clicks and a menu. Here’s how you can make the shutdown process faster.

All you need to do is right-click on any open space on the desktop, then click New > Shortcut. A Location field will appear on the screen. Paste the following in the location field:

%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0

Then, click on Next and complete the shortcut setup.

#89 Now Boost Your WiFi Signal With A Beer Can

In case you are in an agonising pain due to your age old WiFi router’s signal and are thinking of getting a new one, pause for a moment and read this: A humble ‘beer can’ can boost your WiFi signals up to double or triple levels.

PowerTech & Powertechmation: Out of the box thinking proves more valuable than exhaustive drudgery. Depicted in this amazing Lifehack, is one example that how you can boost your WiFi signal with just an empty beer can.

Now, if you are not shocked, that means you already know the physics behind this crazy Lifehack. But if you are surprised to hear that the ‘beer can’ could be as amazing and useful as the stuff inside, then read further.

Creating a crazy fast router is a big deal, but people might be reluctant to spend big bucks on the new technology. However, improvising with what is already available is more appealing. Like this one where you could use a beer can boost your WiFi signal and get more than the glimmers of the Internet beacon at your favorite corner in the house. All you need is some beer, err beer cans.

Cut the beer cans as shown in the video and place it over your router’s antenna. Since the antennas are omnidirectional (sending signals in all directions), the aluminium would act as a reflector and give a particular region in the house a huge boost in the WiFi signals. However, one side would get obstructed so you would have to adjust the positioning of the antenna.

There are other ways to boost your WiFi signals like choosing correct WiFi channels and simple tweaks to improve your WiFi router’s performance.

Watch the video and tell us how much the “beer can” helped you to boost your WiFi strength?

#88 'Facebook TechPrep’ Will Help You Learn To Code

Facebook was created in a dorm of Harvard University by some students to help build connectivity in the campus. Later, with the same goal in mind, one man with his team was able to attach over 2 billion people to his idea today. But Facebook doesn’t want to limit itself to just another successful business model. Instead the ever-expanding Black Hole of the Internet wants you to be aware, learn and generate cognitive curiosity towards computer science.

PowerTech & Powertechmation: Facebook has launched its learning initiative in the form of Facebook TechPrep, which will help the students and parents to develop a strong computer cognizance.

In order to create an inclusive culture, Facebook wants to connect the maximum number of people with the technology and break the walls of ignorance. For that purpose, Facebook has announced to provide free Internet from space as well, starting from Africa.

Facebook, is thus offering its new initiative Facebook Tech Prep which will help to quench the curiosity of the students, expose parents and guardians to the computer science and create an environment of computer learning in the under represented groups by providing resources to all these people.

The resource hub, Facebook Tech Prep will curate to the users the solutions to their requirements as per the individual skills such as the age of the learner, skill level and what kind of education they are interested in.

The TechPrep program specifically targets the unaware public and the parents who find themselves helpless in guiding their children in the field of computer learning.

TechPrep is quite an appreciable effort on the part of Facebook as more and more students and parents in the developing countries would get an opportunity to learn and prepare themselves for the competition awaiting.

#87 Russia Creates A ‘Skynet’ to Lead Its Robo Army

At a time when science and technology stalwarts like Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk are calling for the AI warfare ban, Russian scientists are busy developing the big daddy of the Artificial Intelligence. Well, the country doesn’t have an army of robots, but it sure does have a lot of machines and robots.

PowerTech & Powertechmation: Russians have created a ‘Skynet’ type AI that would soon control all the robotics in the country: civilian, military and even UAVs. The scientists have named it ‘Unicum’ which is the Latin for ‘the only one’.

The researchers at the United Instrument Manufacturing Corporation (OPK), a research corporation that builds high-tech communication tools and systems, automated control systems and advanced electronics and robotic systems for the Armed Forces of Russian Federation, has created a universal software that would give the robots (civilian and military) adequate brains to perform the complex tasks without human directions.

The scientists have named it ‘Unicum’ which is the Latin for ‘the only one’. As the team has tested, the Unicum powered 10 robots, the software was able to communicate and distribute the ‘roles’ among the robots. It even chose the commander of the group.

The Unicum is made to make the battlefield as human-free as possible. In the experiment, the Artificial Intelligence was able to choose targets and request target elimination confirmation from its human masters (thankfully, it does ask for permission).

AI has been undergoing phenomenal developments with each passing day. Just recently the researchers created a psychic robot, and now we have a software that could control all the other machines. What else is left!!

The Deputy Director of OPK, Sergey Skokov said that the technology is almost ready and will soon be installed in real life robotic systems, including UAVs.

He added:

"With Unicum, the robots will be capable of executing tasks independently, to see and evaluate the situation, plotting new courses as well as communicating with other machines. In fact, this is yet another step to the creation of full-fledged artificial intelligence, enabling mechanisms with nearly human capabilities."

Well, when we thought Artificial Intelligence has been maxed out for today’s levels at Tesla’s better than the human self-driving car, and the AI that becomes chess Grandmaster in 72 hours, the Russians took it to a whole other level.

What is your reaction to ‘Unicum’? Tell us in the comments below.

#86 Black Hole of World Wide Web: Facebook Is Sucking The Internet In

When Zuckerberg said that “Facebook was not a created to be a company, but to accomplish a social mission”, little did people expect that in quest of the humane mission of ‘openness and connecting’, the social media platform would try and even succeed to some extent in engulfing the World Wide Web in itself.

PowerTech & Powertechmation: Facebook is fast becoming a one-stop store for all your needs of the Internet by assimilating everything into itself. Is Facebook really sucking the Internet – read more to find out.

Well, objectively it is not possible for any company even as big as Facebook to absorb the Internet, but, assimilating your favorites make it relatively easier. And after doing that, you are trapped in the indefinite Gen Jutsu of scrolling down and watching cats or conspiracy theories (whichever you like).

But the matter of fact is, you just can’t get out. When you have everything you like at one place, from numerous shopping stores to the latest gossip, logging out seems to land us in a predicament.

If you are skeptical about how Facebook is becoming the one stop store and sucking the Internet, then these facts would tell you the truth. The last thing Facebook wants you to do is sign out and here’s how it prevents that.

Targeted And Suggested Videos

The sole difference between YouTube and what Facebook is planning to do is: On YouTube you watch what you want to watch, On Facebook you will watch even if you don’t give a damn about it. And after you have watched one, Facebook will pamper you with more.

And with the current pace, Facebook’s strategy to topple
YouTube’s video monopoly might win. On Jan 2015, Facebook video streams were watched over 4 billion times in a day.

Quick-Loaded Instant Articles and Instant Ads

If you like an article, there are chances that you might leave to the official website. Therefore, Facebook caches the articles for you and displays for the app users reducing the loading time. So, just read and come back.

Similarly, Facebook is relying on the fast load more click behavior of its users while displaying multi-media ads as well.

Add A Link Directly

Specifically targeted for its mobile users, Facebook has given the provision to ‘Add A Link’ directly while sharing. Facebook would use its own keyword search for the purpose. So, no more copy paste from other websites.

What’s Trending

Yes, Facebook also helps you in getting up to date. Why bother with news sites!

Shopping via Facebook

Most of our shopping knowledge and awareness is a gift from Facebook. New online stores with amazing offers and latest fashion trends. Well, now you get everything on the Dedicated Shopping Feed.

For the small businesses who can’t afford a pretty website, Facebook has created a Shop and Services section on their Facebook pages itself. So, if you like their product or services you can instantly opt for one. (Quite philanthropic..)

Facebook Doodle

You liked scribbling your photos on Snapchat, so Facebook gave you a dose of that as well.

Picture-In-Picture Video

Now, instead of links to YouTube for your favorite music, video, Facebook has offered a music label better deal for their videos and show them via the social media. Also, while you are watching, you can use picture-in-picture feature to create a new small tab for it or shrink it down and continue the scrolling. (Well, you must scroll!!)

Facebook Live

Live-streaming is fun, isn’t it. So, Facebook has brought “Live” streaming video feature which is exclusively meant for celebrities.
Now, you can watch your favorite stars’ live broadcast in your news feed.

Hmm, now where did they get the hint from? Ever heard of Periscope and Meerkat.

Buy/Sell on Facebook

If you don’t trust strangers on, other such sites, maybe you would trust them more if they were on Facebook. A new feature was rolled out a few months back that allowed members of a Facebook Group to sell their items and making the deals easier.

Video Calling

You don’t need a hint for this one. Facebook has brought the free video calling feature to its messenger app and one thing is for sure, it would avoid the hassle for downloading other video chat apps.

M-Assistant

Another AI personal assistant in the competition now, Facebook’s M Assistant helps you easing your tasks. Siri, Cortana, are you hearing this?

Well, I don’t care, I want Jarvis! :p

On This Day

Facebook plans to make you nostalgic if you ever got bored anytime with the social media. The on this day feature will make you realize why Facebook is so special!

Pay Through Facebook

Splitting the bill was never so easy! Just go to the new and free friend to friend Payments in Messenger option, open your digital wallet and settle the deal with your friends. All Facebook asks is your credit card information.

GIF Messages

Emoticons, are the things of the past, GIFs are a new rage. Facebook has built a GIF browser and a search engine into its messenger. So, don’t just LOL, send something better.

Virtual Reality

“Virtual Reality is the obvious next step“- Zuckerberg, and Facebook has started taking small strides towards the future with its VR-style videos in the News Feed.

Now, it is not much as becoming the Internet rather than taking over it. Facebook is sucking the Internet by assimilating the best features of other ventures and immersing them into one single platform. Now, no doubt it is a brilliant business strategy, but it is choking out the competition and that is never a healthy scenario.

I’ve included this free PDF password remover software as apart from cracking the passwords, it works as a PDF joiner, PDF combiner and an image to PDF converter.

With this free software, you can delete the unwanted pages and rearrange them in the desired order in high speed and accuracy.
The software also works as a PDF Encrypter and offers you the option to protect your PDF files and set a password.

Our rating: 3/5

My Recommendation: I recommend using PDFCrack PDF password remover software as it is 100% free and it performs all the desired functions. However, if you don’t want to download the software and do the job online, FreeMyPDF.com is the ultimate website.
