#71 Tumor Trace: This Computer Program Can Detect Cancer In Just 2 Days

Cancer- the dreadful disease that has plagued the world today. However, if detected at an early stage, can still be treated. Hence, time plays a crucial factor in the treatment of cancer.

The good news is that researchers at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) have come up with a new computer algorithm called Tumor Trace, that can detect several kinds and location of cancer. And the best part? Well, in just 2 days.

So why did the need of such an algorithm at all arise?

At present, though doctors can diagnose the type and site of cancer, yet it remains undetected in 1 out of 20 cases. This is known as cancer of unknown primary (CUP). That’s really tragic is that people suffering from CUP have to go through a lot of tests and are ultimately given a are given a cocktail of chemotherapy drugs, which often fails to reach and work upon the target area.

1,658,370 new cancer cases were registered in U.S in the year 2015 and there are approximately 30,000 CUP cancer cases every year. Such shocking statistics, demand for a more efficient method of diagnosing cancer.

So, how does Tumor Trace work?

  • This is a self-learning computer algorithm.
  • It compares thousands of samples to diagnose the cancer infected area correctly
  • The program is then able to assess a biopsy and, thereby, providing  a number of scenarios for where cancer may have developed
  • Accuracy was tested on 1,669 public tumors of certain types
  • This including a set of 24 specimens from nine lung cancer patients and a cohort of 91 breast metastases
  • Accuracy was found out to be around 85%
  • It then indicates the probability of those scenarios.

Researchers are optimistic about further improvements in this cancer detecting method which promises of detecting the free cancer cell source in a blood sample. Detection of cancer at an early stage not only increases the chances of full recovery, but also ensures less of physical and mental trauma for the patient.

Could this be one step closer to curing cancer? What are your opinions?  Tell us in the comments below.

#70 This Malware Deletes Your Chrome Browser and Replaces It With a Fake One

A new malware is in the town that is disguising itself as Google Chrome to hijack the computer systems of the users. This malware serves you its own intrusive ads and sells your activity to the third parties.

The researchers at Malwarebytes state that this malware deletes Google Chrome and replaces it by installing itself as your default internet browser. This isn’t the end – the malware makes itself the default program for opening multiple files like html, .JPG, .GIF, .pdf and web links.

This malware is actually efast web Browser that looks just like Google Chrome. It’s even based on the open source Chromium project, so it behaves about the same.

It’s weird to notice that now replacing a browser is actually easier than infecting one. This is so as Google has taken steps to lock down the Chrome extensions by implementing filters lie Google code review and code signing. So, replacing the entire browser could be the new way to attack your PC.

The efast browser malware also deletes all the Google Chrome shortcut and replaces with its own

To spot the efast browser malware, you need to look at the settings. Malwarebytes writes: “It isn’t until you look at the settings that you spot the “about eFast” entry in the menu (or if you type “chrome: //chrome” in the address bar).”

After spotting the efast browser malware on your PC, all you need to do is go to the installed programs list and uninstall the “eFast 000.110010107” entry.

PowerTechknowledge & Powertechmation advises you to install applications on your PC using the trusted sources and following the basic security steps to keep yourself safe.

#69 “seL4” is an Unhackable Kernel for Keeping All Computers Safe From Cyber Attack

Today, the threat of cyber attacks isn’t just limited to computers and smartphones. With the ever-increasing intrusion of computers and electronics in our lives, ranging from our home automation system for cars, everything has become a hacker target.

This could also create problems in the battlefield where any software plays an important role in military and intelligence systems. Recently, in a DARPA drill, hackers were given the complete access to the computer of a Boeing Little Bird helicopter – but they were unable to disrupt the critical systems of the helicopter. How did this happen? Well, the computer in the helicopter was using a new operating system, based on an unhackable kernel.

The kernel is the heart of any computer’s operating system and if hackers can access it, they can do some irreparable damages to your system. Here, I’m talking about a very dangerous situation where security of power station systems, heart pacemakers, vehicles, weapons etc. could be compromised. The Australian national research agency Data61 has developed an unhackable kernel named seL4 – and proved this mathematically.

Gernot Heiser from Data61 writes, “My hope is that in 10 years’ time, anything that is security critical is running on our system or some other one built on the principles we’ve established.”

The seL4 unhackable kernel comes with some very secure characteristics. It can only do what it’s designed to do and its code is unalterable without permission. Along the similar lines, its memory and data can’t be read without permission. Another interesting fact: An earlier version of seL4, known as OKL4, could be found in millions of smartphones.

The seL4 unhackable kernel works this way by isolating the data and the kernel. This could also be used to run two operating systems simultaneously to stop the hacking.

The seL4 unhackable kernel could also be used in multiple situations like medical equipment, manufacturing plants, automobiles, satellites and more.

Watch the video below to know about the basics of a kernel:

#68 Top 6 New Features Expected in iPhone 7

ANTI-OVERHEATING TECH

Some users of the iPhone 6 have been complaining about their Touch ID fingerprint sensors, saying that they have been heated thus causing the home button to be hot. If Apple’s latest patent is anything to go by, that should be a thing of the past. The United States Patent and Trademark Office published a new Apple Patent that describes how Apple will solve the problem. They have found a method to use an in-built temperature sensor that will monitor the temperature of the iPhone. This feature will most likely be in iPhone 7.

GESTURE PASSCODE

When iOS 9 was launched the users were asked to use 6-digit passwords instead of 4-digit ones. iPhone 7 could possibly transform this since Apple has been granted a patent for a gesture passcode system. It is based on non-alphanumeric inputs which are user configurable. Apple has been trying to get this feature since 2012 and they have finally been granted the patent. A gesture will be used to authentic one or more authentication screens. This feature could be in the iPhone 7 or as a software update in iOS 10. As far as security and privacy are concerned, this will definitely be a big step.

INTERNALLY INSTALLED SIM CARDS

Smartphones with physical SIM cards will be a thing of the past, according to a report in the Financial Times released in late July. This project is likely to be implemented in iPhones released in 2016. The software SIM will work with multiple networks. The users will just be required to sign up for mobile data plans directly from the Settings app on their devices. There will be no long term contracts and the users can switch between the network providers anytime they like. The network carriers will definitely not like this move.

WIRELESS CHARGING

The wireless charging did not arrive with iPhone 6 as some had predicted, but it could be a reality in iPhone 7. This feature was introduced in the Apple Watch as inductive charging where the device was placed to charge on a wired mat. Hopefully, this will allow the users to just sit with their iPhones charging while in the pocket. This is not yet confirmed and we can only hope that it will be in iPhone 7.

ELEVATED JOYSTICK

It is rumored that the Home button on iPhone 7 will be able to raise or pop up on a little spring and turn into a mini joystick when playing games. This would definitely benefit the iOS gamers and sounds very interesting. The joystick will then go down after the user is playing the game. However, gamers are not a very big percentage of the device users and it would seem risky for Apple to compromise everyone’s iPhone Home Button for the benefit of the gamers’ community. The idea appeared on an Apple patent published by the US Patent Office in January 2015. The gamers out there can only pray hard that this feature will be in iPhone 7.

DYNAMIC HOME BUTTON

Apple has published a new patent for a new Home that is gesture sensitive. The user will be able to swipe across the Home button or even lean a thumb in a particular direction, to scroll the screen of a game for example. It will be capable of detecting various gestures along with the force of each touch. This feature is definitely less risky than the pop up joystick one above. It could be a possible feature in iPhone 7 but we don’t know for certain.

#67 How to Stop Windows 10 From Spying on You

Windows 10 is now out in the wild and people are installing the “best Windows yet” on their personal computers. Cortana is one of the best features of Windows 10, but it doesn’t handle your data cautiously and assists in Windows 10 spying. Also, with Cortana, some tiny percentage of your CPU power is always dedicated to listening your “Hey Cortana” command. You can just search “Cortana Settings” in the desktop search and disable Cortana to opt out of its suggestions. This will make your desktop search confined to a PC search that gives you results from your Windows 10 PC and settings.

Third Step: Use a local account

Some of you would find it too much as it will restrict you from using online services like One Drive and Windows Store. But, given the Windows 10 spying concerns and data Microsoft extracts to serve you its services, this step is justifiable. Just type “Manage my accounts” in desktop search, or follow Settings – Accounts, to find the options.

Final Step : Opt out of ads

With Windows 10 spying, Microsoft is becoming the new Google of data theft and using the same for serving you advertisements. For hitting the final nail in the coffin, you need to click on this link and visit Microsoft’s website. This gives you options to opt-out of the personalized ad that Microsoft intends to serve you.
