#41 How to Make a Video Game from Scratch

Video games are beyond an up and coming industry: they've arrived. More people are playing video games than ever before, which means there's lots of room for new people to come in and make something great. This person could be you! But how do you do it? The process of making a game is very complicated, but you can do it yourself with little outside help or money. We'll show you the basics that you'll need to consider to make your game and make it great. 





Part 1: Setting Up for Success



Step 1:

Understand your game. You'll need to do some planning and thinking about the big issues if you want to keep your process moving smoothly. What genre will your game be (RPG, shooter, platformer, etc.)? What platform will your game be played on? What will be the unique or prominent features of your game? Each answer to each question will require a different set of resources, skills, and planning, as they have different ways that they impact game development.



Step 2:

A good game design. How the game is designed will be very important, so you'll want to work this kind of thing out before you start making the game. How will players progress through the game? How will players interact with the world? How will you teach players to play your game? What kind of audio and music cues will you use? This is all very important.



Step 3:

Be realistic. If popping out games like Mass Effect was easy, everyone would do it. You need to understand what you can and can't do without a huge studio and lots of experience behind you. You also need to be realistic about what you can accomplish within a reasonable amount of time. If you're not realistic about what you can do, then you're likely to quickly become disappointed and give up. We don't want you to give up!



Step 4:

Get good hardware and software. Making a game anywhere above "mobile" level requires a computer that is, by most definitions, "tricked out". If you're using an older system, you'll find that you are unable to get the game you make to work on your computer. You'll also need some pretty powerful and very specific software for making games. Some programs are free or cheap, but others can cost a lot of money. Good software is discussed in a later section, but know that the software you'll need can include 3D modellers, image editors, text editors, compilers, etc.

  • You'll need a powerful processor (at least a quad core, and preferably one of the new i5s or i7s), lots of RAM, and a high end video card at a minimum.




Part 2: Creating Your Team


Step 1:

Do small games on your own, big games with other people. If you just want to make a quick mobile game with uncomplicated visuals and programming, that's fine. That's a good project to work on your own, because you can use it to show future employers and investors what you're capable of. But if you want to make a more serious game, you're going to need to get some people to help you. Indie games usually have a team of around 5-10 people (depending on complexity) and big name games can have up to several hundred people working on them!



Step 2:

Build your team. You'll need lots of people with lots of different skill sets if you're going to make most types of games. You'll need programmers, modelers, visual designers, gameplay or level designers, audio experts, as well as producers or marketing/money type people.



Step 3:

Create a design document. Think of this like as something between a resume and a battle plan for your game. A design document lays out everything about the design of your game: the gameplay, the mechanics, the character, the plot, etc. In doing so, it also shows everything that needs to be done, who will do it, what the expectations are, and the general timetable for getting things done. Your design document is very important for not only keeping your own team on track, but also for showing to potential investors.

  • Your game design document should be split into sections and include a detailed Table of Contents.

  • Common sections to include cover the story of the game, major and minor characters, the level design, the gameplay, the art and visual design, the game sounds and music, as well as a breakdown of the controls and user interface design.

  • The design document should not be limited to text. You will usually find design sketches, concept art, and even items like preview videos or sound samples.

    • Do not feel limited or too worried about your design document and its formatting. There is no standard format or required items to include. Just make a document that fits your game.



    Step 4:

    Think about the money. It takes money to make a game. If nothing else, the tools is expensive and it's extremely time consuming (taking away from the time you could spend doing things that make actual money). It gets more expensive the more people you need to work with and the more complex their skills need to be in order to make more and more sophisticated games. You need to figure out where your money is going to come from and you need to discuss with your contributors how, when, and how much they will be paid before the actual work begins.

    • The cheapest way to make a game is to do everything 100% yourself. But this is difficult if you lack the skills, and many very different skills are needed. For most inexperienced people working on their own, a simple clone app is about the most that can be managed. Even if you make a game by yourself, you'll still need to pay licensing fees for most good engines and many of the app stores and other sales venues. Don't forget about taxes for the money you do make, either.

    • To make an average quality indie game, you will need roughly in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Major titles often take in the millions of dollars to develop.




    Part 3: Going Through the Motions



    Step 1: 

    Do the programming. You'll need to choose an engine for your game. The game engine is the piece of software that controls all of the little details about how the game works (like AI, physics, etc.). Engines require tools, which are sometimes included but sometimes need to be made from scratch, that allow you to interact with and create the game within the engine. Once that's sorted, you'll need to find someone who knows how to script in that engine. Scripting is where you tell the game engine what to do. This usually requires a certain amount of programming skills.



    Step 2:

    Create the content. You'll also need to start creating the actual content in the game. This means modeling the characters, making the game sprites, making the environments, all of the objects that the player interacts with, etc. Excellent skills with 3D software and visual arts are usually needed to complete these tasks. Meticulous planning-ahead: also good.



    Step 3:

    Get some betas. You need people to play through your game. Never mind finding the bugs: you need people to play it if only to find out how other people see and experience the game. Something that seems intuitive to you may be very confusing for everyone else. A tutorial or story element may be missing. You never know. This is why it's important to get outside views.



    Step 4:

    Test, test, test. Once you're making your game, you're not actually done making your game. You're going to have to test everything. Everything. You need to get through every possible scenario in your game to make sure that there aren't any bugs. This takes time and manpower. Allot a generous schedule of testing!



    Step 5:

    Show off your game. Let people see your game once it's done. Show it to companies that might want to invest in it as well as people who you think might want to play it! Have a website and a development blog, post screenshots, video walk-throughs, trailers, and other content to show people what your game is all about. Drumming up interest will be crucial to the success of your game.



    Step 6:

    Release your game. There are lots of places where you can release a game but where will depend on what type of game you made. Currently the app stores and Steam are the most open to newcomers. You can release your game independently on your own site, but hosting costs tend to be prohibitive. You'll also have less visibility.




    Part 4: Finding Resources


    Step 1:

    Try a beginner's game making programs. There are several great programs that beginners can use to make basic games. The most famous are probably Game Maker and RPG Maker, but Atmosphere and Games Factory are also good. You can also use children's programming training tools, like MIT's Scratch. These are surprisingly good at teaching you the basic skills you'll need.



    Step 2:

    Learn about different graphics software. If you're not hiring a pro to do your graphic works, then you've got a lot of studying ahead of you. You'll need to learn to work a number of complex graphics programs... but you can do it! Photoshop, Blender, GIMP, and Paint.net are good places to start if you want to make the visual elements of your game.



    Step 3:

    Consider going traditional pro. You'll have a much easier time making a successful game and getting investors if you have experience, education, and a well-known game attached to your name. Because of this, it's probably a good idea to work for a traditional, known game developer before breaking out on your own. This might require going to school or acquiring some skills, but it's still working towards your goal and it will be worth it in the end.



    Step 4:

    Work your way into the indie community. The indie game development community is strong, supportive and welcoming. If you're good about supporting, promoting, discussing, and helping them with their projects, they'll return the same in kind. Talk with them, get to know them, and let them get to know you. You'll be surprised what you can accomplish with a community behind you.



    Step 5:

    Crowdfund if you're serious. If you want to make a professional game that can hold its own against other serious games, you're going to have to have money. It's non-negotiable. Luckily, things have really changed in the last few years and crowdfunding has made it possible for unknowns make excellent games. Get acquainted with Kickstarter and similar websites. Just be aware that you'll have to really work to run an excellent campaign, which means realistic goals, great rewards, and constant communication.




    Tips

      • Don't expect your first game to be a revolutionary benchmark. If you really put effort, hey, that could just happen, but it isn't likely. Don't give up just yet, hear from others what went wrong and what they liked. Implement the liked aspects of your second game and improve or remove the disliked or bad aspects of your first game.

      • Keep learning. If you ever need help, ask for it. There are billions of helpful people on making a game so don't ever be afraid to ask or seek for it. And remember, there is always room for improvement, so keep studying and learning about making games.

        • Remember to backup your files frequently. You never know when your computer may crash.

        • Practice as much as you can, so you can get better and better at making games, as they say "Practice Makes Perfect!"

        • Test. Test. Test. One of the most annoying and embarrassing things is to find critical errors, glitches and bugs in your game after it is released to the public. Set your game into stages such as "development" (still making), "alpha" (initial or early testing), "closed beta" (a before-release testing for inviting or chosen people) and "open beta" (a before-release testing for the whole public). Choose the appropriate people for close-beta and alpha stages and collect as much feedback and constructive criticism as you can. Use them to improve your game and fix as many bugs as possible before the release. Note: Add a "pre-" or "version xx. xx" to your stages to refine them even more. Make sure it is clearly marked as a development release if it is one.

        • Create hype and advertise. Let's face it, you are not the only amateur game creator. You can release a game and it will be instantly shadowed by newer and/or better games being released. To counter this, spread the word about your upcoming game through whatever means necessary. "Leak" some details here and there. Put a release date so people look forward to it even more. If it's appropriate, you may even want to consider paying for advertising.

        • Remember, a team is always better than going solo. You can significantly decrease the workload and time spent by splitting members into graphical and coding, then add more divisions such as writing and composing, etc. This is an important area that depends on what software you choose, as graphical game builders such as BGE, Unity and the UDK have poor support for a team workflow, and editing code directly and pushing for a version control system such as git is probably a better idea.

        • Finally, don't ever give up. Creating a game can be a boring, tiring and frustrating process. At times you will feel the urge to just give up and do something else. Don't. Take a break, go out for a while and put it off for a few days. You'll return feeling more confident again.

        • Set a work plan. If this the first time and you want to take it easy and experiment then it may not be necessary. However, it can keep you on track and may be especially important if you have a promised release date. Plan roughly when you want to get it done and then refine it into sub-sections of coding/graphical stages, etc.




        Warnings 

        • Copyrights! Be as original with ideas of your game as possible. If you cannot think of anything else, a good idea is to borrow some aspect of a game and modify it. If you absolutely must include copyrighted aspects of games such as plot, characters or music, acknowledge the original creator(s). Concepts (gameplay, how you write your code, etcetera) cannot be copyrighted, though characters' names and narrative universes are by default.

        • Make sure to respect the license of the tools you use. A lot of proprietary software (such as Unity) forbids commercial usage (that is, you cannot sell a game made with it) without paying up for an expensive license. This is where open source software can really help as it allows commercial usage. Be careful with 'copyleft' open source software though. The GNU General Public License is an example of such a license. It stipulates that you must release your software under the same license. This is okay for games and you can still sell them if you keep the art assets and such things to yourself. However, you may have legal issues if you use any closed source software library such as FMOD. Additionally - especially if you are a good programmer, you have access to the source code and are now working with a black box all the time and can debug and add features as you see fit.         #40 How to Do Computer Animation

        Hello, Friend's today I am going to show you how to start computer animation for beginners.



        Steps


        Step 1:


        Select a computer program. You must select the right app for the right type of animated production. For example, if you are looking to create simple stick figure animations, use something like Pivot Stick Figure Animator. If you are looking to create cartoons, animations, use Anime Studio. If you want to create professional standard 2D animations, use Adobe Flash, from the Master Collection. To create complex 3D animations, go to AutoDesk Maya.




        Step 2:


        Now you've selected your program, you must learn to use it. Some programs come with inbuilt user manuals, but some don't. If you need help, find an official forum, make use of Yahoo! Answers, or browse YouTube for helpful video tutorials. Learn the basics, even if it seems tedious at first. Remember to try as you learn; don't just watch hours of tutorials and not even open the program.




        Step 3:


        Share your animation with the world! Export your animation as an MP4 to share it with YouTube, or the official community. Each program is different, but again, use the internet to help you do this!




        Tips


        • Keep at it! Don't quit if you don't understand within the first day or so!

        • Keep your software updated.

        • Make sure you save regularly.

        • You don't necessarily need a beefy computer to run animation software, but it does help with complex rendering.


        #39 How to Clean up a Computer & Fix Problems for Free

        After you have had your computer for a while,you may notice that it is not running as fast and as well as it once was.Maybe you have a specific problem,or perhaps you are just experiencing a general slowing-down of your machine.This article will give you tips on how to clean up your computer and solve your computer problems for free.



        STEPS


        Step 1:

        Update your software. Any time your computer prompts you to update your software, you should do it. This is especially true of any virus protection, disk cleanup, or security updates. You should also update your web browser, as new editions will often come with security upgrades. Updating your software can help you prevent computer problems before they start.



        Step 2:

        Clean your registry. In Windows, the registry is a large database of program information, settings, and more. Over time, it can become filled with useless information that slows the functioning of your computer. Fortunately, there are a number of free programs that can help you clean your registry, which should improve your computer’s performance.

          Step 4:

          Call for a free diagnostic. Fortunately, a number of companies offer free diagnostics for computer problems. These consultations are usually done over the phone.             • Note that this does not necessarily mean that it will be free to actually have your problem solved, just that you can get a free diagnosis of your problems.

              Talk to friends, acquaintances, or co-workers about your computer problems. Talking with people you know can be the best way to get computer advice without having to pay. Maybe you have a friend who is good with computers or an IT employee at your office who would be willing to help you out. It never hurts to ask, so go ahead and ask, but be considerate if it is beyond their abilities to help.



              Step 6:

              Browse Internet forums for advice with problems. If you have a specific problem with your computer, you should try doing a Google search for it. There are numerous Internet forums where people come together to discuss computer problems, and you may just be able to find your solution.

                Consult a reliable source before trying any self-fixes. The worst thing you can do is to make your problems worse by trying to implement a fix that you are not comfortable with. This is especially true of removing files from your computer, since the language of the computer is often difficult to understand, and you can end up deleting critical files. So, always make sure to consult an expert before applying any drastic changes. This can be a friend, IT staff at work, online forum, or a free consultation service.




                Warnings

                  • Never remove files if you are not exactly sure of their function. You can cause more damage in the long run by deleting files and programs that are critical to your computer.

                  • Always cross-reference advice that you find online. Make sure that any advice you receive from a faceless source is referenced in multiple places. This will not only save you time if the advice is bad, but it can also potentially save you from damaging your computer.

                  #38 Dell Alienware 13 Review

                  Glitteringly glorious, but not the best anymore

                      Our Verdict

                      The Alienware 13 is a good performer, but it loses out to couple of sub-100k laptops, like the Lenovo Y50 and ASUS X550JK. The laptop will perform better with an external GPU, which can be used via the Alienware Graphics Amplifier, which again requires you to shell out more money.




                      The new Alienware 13 is meant to be an ultraportable gaming laptop with unique  looks and distinctive style. Its screen lid is made of high quality plastic mixed with carbon fibre, its keyboard deck and chassis as firm as a ThinkPad’s, giving the notebook very good build quality and rigidity. And when it comes to its  looks, we can assuredly say that the Alienware 13 remains quite unique, given its angular design accents, glowing LED keyboard and logo, and overall cool quotient. The pre-installed Alienware Command Center is pretty intuitive when it comes to letting you configure the LED glow colour across the keyboard, logo and accents on the Alienware. It will make heads turn in a LAN party for sure, earning you extra brownie points if that sort of thing matters to you. Its HD webcam is great for Skype or Google Hangout, picking up voice input flawlessly for the most part.



                      The gaming laptop is high on features, bundling with all that a laptop selling at its price needs to have, and even more. On its back panel lies a custom PCIe bridge to connect it to an external graphics amplification device (sold separately) called the Alienware Graphics Amplifier. It’s meant to future proof the Alienware 13’s graphics capabilities, by allowing you to plug in any desktop-sized PCIe graphics card and keep conquering future games. It’s a great concept, one that we would’ve liked to test for this review, but Alienware forgot to send us the Amplifier.



                      The Alienware 13 has a bright, glossy QHD (2560x1440 resolution) touchscreen display. It’s one of the better displays we’ve seen on a notebook, offering nice viewing angles and sharpness, and the multitouch input works like a charm on Windows 8 natively – but it’s a mirror, reflecting any lit object in the room. Its on-board speakers are good as well. The laptop’s keyboard is great to use and its touchpad isn’t too bad either. The machine heats up while gaming, but it copes well with fans and large vents on its bottom panel to keep temps under the 60 deg C mark. This machine is very good for multimedia use, its Klipsch speakers providing very good audio output, but drops the ball in the gaming department. Its combination of an Intel Core i5 chip and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M GPU pump out most modern games well at medium settings, but that’s not even par for the course on an Alienware. On the screen’s native resolution and high to ultra settings, gaming isn’t worth your time. Its battery life isn’t too bad at 2 hours 39 minutes in our high-performance synthetic test – of course, the more the better.



                      At one point of time, it would’ve been next to impossible to think of Alienware not being the best gaming laptop out there. But that time has come. The Alienware continues to bedazzle you with its exquisite looks, glowing LED accents, QHD touchscreen display, even its rugged build quality. However, this 13-inch SKU blinks in the face of competition when it comes to its performance. Its proprietary PCIe port for external graphics amplification is useless unless you shell out more money for the Alienware Graphics Amplifier. In terms of  performance – which is what matters in a gaming laptop at the end of the day – the Alienware 13 loses out of couple of sub-1 lakh laptops like Lenovo Y50 and ASUS X550JK. Does that make the Alienware 13 an undesirable laptop? Not by a long shot.

                      #37 Apple's latest patent filing hints at future waterproof iPhones

                      Apple's new patent could lead to waterproof iPhones and wearable's in the future



                      Apple has filed a new patent application that reveals that the company is actively researching new methods of waterproofing its phones. The new patent could lead to waterproofed Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches.  







                      Apple new patent at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for "Methods for shielding electronic components from moisture" outlines a process for coating sensitive device components using advanced vapor deposition technology and protecting solder leads with silicone seals.



                      According to the patent filed by Apple on March 31, 2014 and published on March 5, 2015, “Many electronic devices are susceptible to water damage because they are not fully sealed and include various openings for charging, connecting peripherals, and inputting and outputting audio.” 



                      The patent describes a new hydrophobic/ water-repelling coating to a device’s printed circuit board (PCB) by a plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD) process, which charges a substrate’s surface to connect the coating to the charged surface. The patent states that, “The plasma then settles on and adheres to the component, providing a robust, water-resistant, corrosion-resistant protective seal for the component.” 



                      The new technology would allow Apple to protect its devices against moisture without sacrificing on their design. CEO Tim Cook had recently revealed that the Apple Watch, it has splash resistance and can be worn in the shower.



                      Rivals, Sony and Samsung already use waterproofing methods on their smartphone and tablets that involve sealing of ports. Samsung's Galaxy S5 was water-resistant, while Sony’s Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact phones are waterproof, as well as the recently introduced Sony Xperia M4 Aqua.

                      #36 How to Open DLL Files

                      Hello, Friend's today I am going to show you how to open DLL Files.


                      The Dynamic Link Library, or DLL file, is a mainstay of traditional Windows programming. These files are used by programs to gain additional functionality and libraries without having to have them built-in to the program itself. Oftentimes, DLL files are shared across many different programs. For most users, DLLs work in the background, and you should rarely have to deal with them. Occasionally, however, you may need to register a DLL in order for a program you've installed to work properly. If you're interested in coding, exploring how DLLs are constructed can also be very illuminating.



                      Method 1: Using DLL Files


                      Step 1:


                      Understand what a DLL file is. A DLL (dynamic link library) is a Windows file that is used by programmers to call upon existing functions. Essentially, they allow Windows and other programs to gain functionality without having to have that functionality built-in.

                      • DLL files are an essential part of Windows programming, and lead to sleeker, more efficient programs.




                      Step 2:


                      Know that the average user doesn't need to open or interact with DLL files. For most users, DLL files will exist in the background. Programs will install and call upon them automatically, and moving them can cause serious problems with the system.

                      • Sometimes you may be asked during the installation of community-made programs to place DLL files in specific locations. Make sure that you trust the program before following these instructions, as DLL files can be malicious.




                      Step 3:


                      Register a new DLL (if necessary). If you have had to manually copy a DLL file into a folder for a program to use, you may need to register it in the Windows Registry before it can be used.


                      • Open the Command Prompt. You can find this in the Start menu or by pressing ⊞ Win+R and typing cmd. Navigate to the location of the new DLL file.

                      • If you are using Windows 7 or newer, open the folder containing the new DLL file, hold the ⇧ Shift key and right-click in the folder, and select "Open command window here". The Command Prompt will open directly to that folder.

                      • Type regsvr32 dllname.dll and press ↵ Enter. This will add the DLL file to the Windows Registry.

                      • Type regsvr32 -u dllname.dll to remove the DLL file from the Windows Registry.



                      Method 2: Decompiling DLL Files




                      Step 1: 


                      Download and install a decompiler. In order to see the code that makes a DLL file work, you will need to use a decompiler to revert it back into readable code.

                      • dotPeek is one of the more popular free decompilers. It is available from jetbrains.com/decompiler/.




                      Step 2: 


                      Open the DLL file in your decompiler. If you're using dotPeek, simply click "File" → "Open" and then browse for the DLL file you want to decompile. You can explore the contents of the DLL file without affecting your system.



                      Step 3:


                      Use the "Assembly Explorer" to browse the nodes of the DLL file. DLL files are made of "nodes", or modules of code that work together to form the entire DLL file. You can expand each node to see any subnodes that it may contain.



                      Step 4:


                      Double-click a node to see the code for it. The code for the node you select will appear in the right frame of dotPeek. You can scroll through the code to review it. dotPeek will display the code in C#, or it can download additional libraries in order for you to view the original source code.

                      • If the node requires additional libraries to view, dotPeek will attempt to download them automatically.



                      Step 5:


                      Get clarification for different pieces of the code. If you've found a piece of code you don't understand, you can use the Quick Documentation feature to see what the command is doing.

                      • Place your cursor in the piece of code that you need documentation for in the Code Viewer frame.

                      • Press ^ Ctrl+Q to load the Quick Documentation window.

                      • Follow the hyperlinks to learn more about each aspect of the code you are examining.




                      Step 6:


                      Export the code to Visual Basic. If you want to manipulate, edit, and built the file on your own, you can export it into Visual Studio. The exported code will be in C#, even if it was originally written in a different language originally.

                      • Right-click on the DLL file in the Assembly Explorer.

                      • Select "Export to Project"

                      • Choose your export options. You can have the project open immediately in Visual Studio if you'd like to get started on it immediately.




                      Step 7:


                      Edit the code in Visual Studio. Once you have the project loaded in Visual Studio, you will have complete control over editing and building the DLL into your own creation. Click here for detailed instructions on using Visual Studio.

                      Have you ever wondered what it was like to make a game? Ever wondered why it is so hard for some programmers to add certain features into a game? Here you will learn how to overcome the many hardships and difficulties you may have making a PC game.




                      STEPS



                      Step 1:

                      Go to yoyogames.com. You will first see a bar at the top labeled with "Play","Make", "Share" and "Help".Click on "Make" At the top of the screen. Go to the downloads page and download Game maker 7.0(not 8.0).




                      Step 2:

                      Once you have it downloaded and installed, open it up, go to file and click "Advanced mode". This will give you many more features for you make your game.




                      Step 3:

                      Now you'll need some pictures for your game. Pictures are called "sprites". Click on the little red Pac man at the top and click edit sprite. This will open up a whole new window and give you a blank green picture. Click on it and draw a picture with the built-in picture editor. You may also create multiple pictures to form an animation. (ALSO: you can alternatively import strips/pictures from other locations by clicking "File" in the top left)




                      Step 4:

                      Once you have your sprites finished and named, move on to the "Sounds" tab. Right-click and click create new sound. This will give you the option of importing music, effects, or any other sound into creating your game. Once you have it named, imported in, adjusted, and anything else you want, click done.




                      Step 5:

                      Skip over background, paths, and scripts. Right click on objects and click create new object. This is where the real programming happens. Click add sprite and click on your picture. Now, click on "add event" and click keyboard, up arrow key. You will notice an up key event has been added. Go to the move tab and drag the top left red move square in the white area. You will now be prompted to set the direction and speed. 3-6 is a good range, so put down 4. Repeat that to the left, right, and down key events with left, right, and down. Once you are done, click on "add event" for the fifthtime and press "release key" now here you just repeat what you just did, except for the move event set the speed to "0" and change the direction to stop. Now click "done" and right click rooms and click add a new room. Select your object in the drop-down and click to put it in the room and you're done. In your first game. Click "play" at the top to try it out. You may experiment with many events, tabs, and actions. Or even try to make a long 100 object game.
